なぞっておぼえる大人の漢字練習 完全版 is the sequel to なぞっておぼえる大人の漢字練習, which we reviewed here at Naruhodo! The first game is one of the best kanji games out right now, great for intermediate learners up. The first game paid careful attention to teaching each character within the Joyo set one by one, focusing on writing and readings. The sequel appears to use a similar format and has added an additional 316 characters, bringing the total number of kanji in its curriculum to 2261. It will also be loaded with loads of great features such as models showing the proper way to write each character and a useful light dictionary function. Looks to be packed with minigames as well. You can even change the color of your writing. Very slick.なぞっておぼえる大人の漢字練習 完全版 comes out November 22nd.
読めそうで読めない漢字DS looks to reinforce the diminishing kanji ability of native speakers due to the expanding use of electronic devices such as computers and mobile phones. With machines writing kanji for us, many of us have forgotten characters that have our ancestors turning over in their graves. The title looks to feature a number of drills aimed to help you remember how to read and write characters used in daily life and more difficult ones. (But somebody really needs to teach these guys how to make a user-friendly website.)読めそうで読めない漢字DS comes out November 22nd.
陰山メソッド 正しい漢字かきとりくん 今度は漢検対策だよ! is a follow-up to 陰山メソッド 正しい漢字かきとりくん, which received a good amount of praise. The first game focused on teaching elementary school-level kanji and was extremely approachable even for low-level learners. The sequel, as the name suggests, turns its attention from elementary kanji to Kanji Kentei training. I haven't been able to track down the official website, so I'm not too certain of the details, but from screenshots the game is looking pretty nice and even seems to contain a dictionary with definitions.陰山メソッド 正しい漢字かきとりくん 今度は漢検対策だよ! comes out November 29th.
まる書いてドンドン覚える 驚異のつがわ式漢字記憶術~基礎学習編~ aka Tsugawa Method DS: The Basics is a follow up to まる書いてドンドン覚える 驚異のつがわ式漢字記憶術. Tsugawa Method DS featured a simple mnemonic device for remembering how to write troublesome kanji. All you had to do was draw a circle around the parts of the character you had trouble remembering. Then you spent a moment concentrating on it, after which you'd be able to write the character with no problem. The first game featured mostly difficult kanji, making it hard for low-level learners to get much use out of the software. The Basics, however, will feature kanji taught in the elementary and junior high school curriculum, making it much more beginner-friendly.まる書いてドンドン覚える 驚異のつがわ式漢字記憶術~基礎学習編~ comes out December 6th.
Looks like there's a game for almost any learner in this batch.

Thanks for the list! Love finding out about the kanji games through this site.
POPjisyo has some study games too. There is a kanji matching game where you can review the kanji in a web page. Kinda interesting.
I haven't bought any of the DS ones yet since I'm afraid they might be just as neglected as my other kanji study books.
Hi Chris,
Does that mean that I have to get both なぞっておぼえる大人の漢字練習 完全版 and なぞっておぼえる大人の漢字練習? or just the second version?
Thanks
veggie bun,
You should be fine with just the 完全版, the second one. It should contain everything the first one did and more.
Thanks again Chris. I'll order the second one soon. :)
Hello!
Is there a Kanji learning software for the DS for real beginners? Kana no problem... just to learn 1-500 kanji or so.
I've ordered なぞっておぼえる大人の漢字練習 完全版 and will receive it soon.
Should I get まる書いてドンドン覚える 驚異のつがわ式漢字記憶術~基礎学習編~ too?

If you are an absolute beginning, then there is no substitute for a good textbook or classroom environment. I would highly suggest the above for tackling your first few hundred kanji. Then you could move on to Kakitori Kun or Nazotte Oboeru Otona no Renshu.
veggie bun,
Be sure to let us know how you like なぞっておぼえる大人の漢字練習 完全版! I will probably pick up a copy myself, soon.
I haven't had a chance to check out the new Tsugawa Method game, but I'd suspect it's pretty useful like its prequel. But I'm sure Nazotte will keep you plenty busy for now, so you might just want to stick with that for a bit.
Thank you, Chris!
Hehe.. You see, I love buying things.. but I guess, like you say, I should probably finish the Nazotte game first. ;)
veggie bun,
I should also mention that since the Tsugawa Method is, above all else, a mnemonic recollection method, it's best suited to use when reviewing material you already know.
Nazotte Oboeru, on the other hand, is great for learning new stuff.
Received the Nazotte game last Saturday and had been playing with it daily. Its quite fun to use for learning the onyomi and kunyomi pronunciations of the words (written in kana). I know how to read and speak chinese (but can't write) so I could guess the meaning of the words. But, I would like it better if there is a dictionary (to English) with this game. (Maybe it has but I have not found it yet)

just saying, if you didnt alreay know.
I've purchased the newest Kageyama method (too lazy to type the full title). In one word: crippleware.
I explain:
At first it looks just fine. I fluked the test at the beginning (not a single good answer, I was perplexed) but as you will see there is a reason for that.
I tried the kakitori mode and it's very helpful. Once I had completed the first set of kanjis I tried the drill and this is where is gets ugly.
I tried to write the character; no luck, it wouldn't be recognized. Revised the stroke order, fine. Tried in kakitori, I get 90th percentile, fine. Tried to draw slower or more elegantly, no luck; in fact, if you take too long between strokes it validates automatically... Tried writing another character to see if it recognizes *anything*, even something as simple as ichi or nin, won't work. Tried in right-handed mode (because I'm left-handed); still doesn't work.
I noticed that it works about once in fifty times, which is enraging enough. But the worst is, when I validate, it rejects the answer, and at the next screen it provides the correct answer... the exact same thing I had written and that it had recongized!!!! You can't even skip the question; you have only mou ichido and go back. *grrr*
Perhaps this is because I'm the only moron in the universe that cannot figure out how use the software, or that my DS is so subtly defective that it can't even validate the answer properly without other significant glitches. Far more likely, this is crippleware, and nobody tested the main functionality on a real DS before shipping it to the stores.
