so, what *exactly* does this version offer in the way of a dictionary, and dictionary features?

like that other separate software (漢字そのまま DS楽引辞典), can you write kanji you don't know the reading for, and get the info on it?

Yes, you can write kanji, but since it's specifically a kanji dictionary, the info you get is limited compared to a regular dictionary.

What you do get is:
-on and kun readings
-radical
-# of strokes
-stroke order

So it's nice to have handy while you're studying via the software. I'll cover more in the review.

Been very pleased with it, mostly because they ironed out a lot of the annoyances with the previous version. You can freely test at any level you like, there's less unnecessary and annoying clicks, games give you the correct answer if you make a mistake etc. One complaint though is the fonts - the regular font seems to have been rasterised without the aid of hinting, so it just looks ugly and uneven (though it is slightly easier to read). It may be intentional but on the stroke order parts of the test where one stroke is highlighted red, the character is so jaggy it's hard at times to make out what it is - antialiased rasterisations do not look good magnified.

This is awesome!

I was wondering if there are any similar versions out for Katakana/hiragana/really simple kanji out there for children? I found the Thomas Train game and my four year old son and I are having a blast with it. We also found a couple fo those children books with english/japanese versions of the stories, but I was hoping to find some more interactive ones...?

I saw this software and wanted to get the set up. I don't play video games.
Does a Nintendo DS bought in Japan take US software? Or will it only play Japanese software games??? In other words, are Nintendo DS in US and Japan the same?

The Nintendo DS is region free, so any game will work in any device.

I've noticed Kanken DS2 does suffer from a couple of the same problems as the first one. First off, the questions seem to be picked using simultaneous randomisation (or in real words, there's nothing to stop the same question coming up twice in a row, and it does happen). Rather than picking each question as it's about to be asked, it would be better to pick the questions for the entire test in one go at the start. The other issue I've only spotted in the 5級 2字熟語 section (where they describe a word and give you 10 characters to make the word) is that a particular word and description always appear every single time without exception. In Kanken DS it was 「非常に大切にすること」(「貴重」), and in Kanken DS2 it's 「持っている力をおもてに出すこと」(「発揮」). Even the katakana used to piece the characters together remain the same. Use the training function to see for yourself!

Never tried this, but believe this is useful tool to build up your kanji DB.
That said, the ads ft. Doctoress Nishikawa are simply pathetic. Nothing to add.
