Mondaina Nihongo DS Coming Soon

Software publisher Hudson has what looks to be like a great Japanese language title coming out in September for the DS. Mondaina Nihongo DS is based off of the popular book series of the same name.

I've bought both books (so far two in the series) and they're really good for brushing up on keigo, idioms, kanji, grammar, and vocabulary that is hard to use even for Japanese people (along with the usual common mistakes that are made by native speakers...here's a sampling of the kind of things the books deal with). I just hope that the DS title explains answers with the kind of clear, detailed explanations that the books do.

The site is a bit sparse as there is still a couple of months to go until the September 6th release, but it looks like there will be 4 game modes, a chart to see your progress and problem areas, and a mini 検定 section (up to 5級)where if you clear it, you unlock 60 "cute" mangas featuring the cat mascot.

All in all, if it follows the form of the books...advanced students might want to think about picking this one up (of course we will be reviewing it here..I plan to pick up a copy at least).

I can't wait for this to come out! The 問題な日本語 books are great, so the game should be a valuable resource as well.

I'll probably pick this up just out of curiosity, since I'll be in Japan at that time anyhow.

It's way beyond my level though.

Great! I think it will be a great tool for Japanese grammar / vocabulary.

Mabye instead of the DS game you could try the books first? Those you can pick up at any major, and most local, bookstores here. If your picking up what your reading, then you could jump in and pick up the game as well. Don't worry about your level. If it motivates you..then it's worth it!

I'll get a book to see what it's like. Are there different levels to the books? Which one is the easiest one?

Not really, just book one and book two (もっと問題な日本語). They aren't really divided into levels..just parts. I'd say go for the first one for no other special reason that it's first and will deal with the most common problem areas.

I just got a DS Lite (partially because I wanna play Mario and Monkeyball; partially because I can't afford a real Japanese dictionary) and I've been reading your reviews. They've been so helpful! I think I'm gonna start out with 正しい漢字書きとりくん (I'm still learning the elementary school kanji!), and probably buy that 漢字そのまま floating around. Great blog =)
